Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, a reminder that small actions can save lives.
In 2023, more than 7,000 people in the UK died by suicide. That’s around 19 people every single day. Suicide is still the biggest killer of men under 50, and far too many young people’s lives are also being cut short. Behind each number is a person, a family, and a community left grieving.
The important thing to remember is that support is always out there, and reaching out really can make a difference. Sometimes a simple “I’m here if you want to talk” can be the first step to saving a life.
If you or someone you know is struggling, here are some places you can turn for help:
– Samaritans – call on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org, available 24/7
– Papyrus (HOPELINEUK) – support for under 35s, call 0800 068 4141
– NHS – help and guidance online if you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts
If you believe someone is in immediate danger, please call 999 right away.
Talking about suicide doesn’t make it more likely to happen, but staying silent can leave people feeling alone. Today is about reminding each other that no one has to go through this alone, and that hope and help are always possible.
