Blog: Embrace mistakes

on

So you just made a mistake. It could be something huge, it might be something small, but you believe you have made a mistake. How would you react?

In my past I would often beat myself up for any mistake I made. It wouldn’t matter what the severity of the (perceived) error was, I would hit the self blame hard. My focus would be on putting myself down, self deprecating or worse. What I wouldn’t do is seek to learn from my mistake.

Learn from your mistakes. Its one of those phrases we hear often. It’s quite a valid statement in my view. I feel like we often take this statement as a negative, make yourself feel bad, and then force yourself to do better. If we could only learn to embrace our mistakes and use them as a force for growth, we could lift a burden for ourselves in life.

If we learn that no one is perfect, and we all make mistakes we can begin to learn from this. Making mistakes is often how human knowledge changes and advances. We might be trying to research or learn something new, but something in the process goes wrong. But we actually discover something new, or a different way to achieve something. That is a mistake, but one where we can learn.

I make mistakes. I often make them when I start a new job. I wouldn’t beat myself up over it. Your new in a job, making a mistake and learning from it an important part of your development .
Making mistakes is part of our journey through life. An existence without mistakes is not a reality for anyone. Finding ways to positively learn, reset and move forwards is a very healthy way to progress in life.

Embrace a mistake. Acknowledge your learning. I write them down in my journal, not to punish myself. I acknowledge what I have learned, and even use it for goal setting afterwards.
Could you embrace and acknowledge your mistakes. Could you positively learn and grow from them?
